Eating Seasonally: Nourishing our Body in the Summer

Adapting our diet seasonally is a way to help balance and support our body as our external environment changes. Both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine teach us that it’s important for our health to adapt what we are eating to the seasons as each season the elements or energy shift.  Summer brings a predominance of heat or the element of fire and choosing foods that balance that with cooling energy can be helpful for feeling our best (note that cooling does not equate to cold temperature foods).

First and foremost, we want to make sure that we stay hydrated.  I have found in the dry climate of Colorado, that I need to drink lots of water, and I feel more hydrated using electrolytes added to my water one or two times a day on hot days.  I prefer added electrolytes, but you can also drink coconut water or watermelon juice (though be conscious of the sugar) to boost hydration.

Now is the season to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Leafy greens, especially bitter greens, can help balance our bodies and nourish us with important phytonutrients.  Berries, watermelon, cantaloupe, and cucumbers all have a cooling quality, are packed with antioxidants and nutrients, and are delicious in season.

You can also use herbs with a cooling quality as well such as mint, cilantro, or basil.  Herbs enhance flavor and contribute to the nutritional value of the food you are eating. For example, basil has vitamin K as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds.  We know from research that even culinary quantities of foods (the amount of herbs and spices we use) affect our microbiome and our health.

One of my favorite summer treats is water with mint and lemon or mixing a little mint with cut up watermelon.  What are your favorite summer treats?

Of note, every body is different. Even though these foods have health benefits, they may not feel good in your body, and it’s important to honor that.  You can always try making small changes in your diet and see how you feel.  You are the expert of what works in your body and it’s always important to honor that and listen to what your body is telling you. Enjoy the flavors of summer!
